Between 1975 and 2003, courts imposed a total of 83 fines which were greater than £100,000; in the last five years alone, there have been 132 fines of this size. But are fines for health and safety offences still too low? Who should be responsible for determining the penalties for employers convicted of health and safety crimes? And what impact will be the new sentencing guidelines for manslaughter have on fines? Howard Fidderman argues that sentencing should not be left to the courts in When things go wrong.

On Friday, we held the first HSP roundtable. Six health and safety professionals joined us on a teleconference to discuss some of the latest topical issues in industry. Topics they covered include:

Should we follow the rules or use our initiative?

Keeping health and safety high on the board agenda

How have the CDM Regs bedded down?
