On Friday a Sunderland building firm was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £5000 compensation after a 2.8-metre fall left a worker unable to return to his job.

This latest case follows several high-profile prosecutions for unsafe work at height. Last week roof firm owner Roy Clark was jailed for the manslaughter of 17-year-old employee Daniel Dennis, and a Hampshire firm was fined £15,000 after an engineer suffered spinal injuries falling 4m through a skylight.

For advice on working safely at height, visit our work at height pages and read our feature on fragile roofs.
