Simon Airey

Simon practised at the Chancery Bar for 12 years before joining DLA Piper. He specialises in regulatory and tax investigations, and is currently advising a large number of banks in relation to compulsory disclosure notices being sought by HMRC in relation to customers with offshore assets and investments. Simon has recently acted in a number of highly sensitive tax and VAT enquiries, and has also been involved in several substantial class actions against HMRC Customs pursued by way of Group Litigation Orders involving approximately 200 of the world’s largest multinational companies. He also acted as lead lawyer challenging the HMRC’s approach regarding the method accounting for the depreciation of stock. The claim, worth many millions of pounds, resulted in success in the Special Commissioners and subsequently in the House of Lords on behalf of a group of major companies.
