Dr. John McMullen

Partner and Head of Employment Law at Watson Burton LLP and Professor of Labour Law at the University of Leeds.

Dr John McMullen is a Council Member of the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). He is one of the country’s leading employment practitioners and has a national and international reputation on the subject of transfer of undertakings. He is the author of the leading text book on the subject, Business Transfers and Employee Rights (LexisNexis Butterworths, Looseleaf and Bulletins).

Business Transfers and Employee Rights has been cited judicially on a number of occasions. John has also given evidence to House of Lords and House of Commons Select Committees on TUPE.

He is also the editor of Redundancy Law and Practice (Sweet & Maxwell, Second Edition, 2000) and author and contributor to a number of other books and services. He is a frequent contributor to Personnel Today and Employers Law, a consultant editor of XpertHR (responsible for the chapters on TUPE) and an advisory editor of Sweet & Maxwell’s Encyclopaedia of Employment Law. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

John’s practical experience in TUPE is extensive. As well as being a writer and commentator on the subject he advises in the public and private sectors on the subject of staff transfers. This includes wide experience in mergers and acquisitions, outsourcing, franchising and complex restructuring. In the context of public sector transfers he has considerable experience of intra public sector transfers, central and local government contracting for services and PFI/PPP transactions.
